I am going to Harbin on Jan 6, 2008. Is there any way we can purchase train ticket from Harbin to Beijing in advance? appreciate any advise you can provide as we are on budget travel.

As independent travelers, it is not easy to do if you are not in China. If you are in Haerbin, though, you can buy train tickets up to 10 days before the departure date. If you don't speak Chinese and are budget conscious, perhaps the easiest way to do it is to go to the Haerbin train station and find the English ticket-window (there is one, just be patient in finding it if it's not immediately clear). As China train stations go, Haerbin's is pretty good.

Dear crewrower, Thanks for your reply. Language is not a major problem as i can speak adequate chinese. My only concern is that the train ticket might be sold out by the time i arrive in Harbin which is in January and I will only be staying in Harbin for 2 days. If there is no other way to buy in advance, i will buy the ticket at the point of my arrival date. :)

Contact the hotel that you'll be staying at and get them to buy in advance for you. This is ultra-peak period for Harbin and transport will be very busy.

Your hotel might be able to help - but if you're staying at a cheap place, maybe not.

It is a busy period but I wouldn't say "ultra" busy to the point where you definitely wouldn't be able to land a ticket two days prior.
