Perth Perth Dilemma - Winter Packing Problem
Posted: Fri November 30, 2007 10:12 PM UTC
It looks like I will be coming to Perth for a 4-day convention, and several days leisure pre-post, in mid-June 2008. I've checked the weather, and it was about 6C-14C (44F-57F) last year, and some rain. Brrr .. I was picturing myself in open-toed sandals and all-cotton, like last November in N.T. and northern W.A. Now, I need to consider what type of coat to bring. Since it has to go with business clothes, what would you suggest? Trouble is, I'll also have some leisure days when I'll just be in casual clothes. If I don't have what is suitable to Aus-wear, then I'll look at the post-holiday sales here. You fashionistic VT Perth gals could help me with your good advice, and many thanks!

Hi Marianne, Perth in mid June should not be very cold, expect the sun on most days and the temperature during the day will most likely be range 16 to 20 Centigrade, not F. Most people do not wear heavy coats below the knees, a jacket / blazer should be sufficient with slacks. The minimum temperature is usually around 4 or 5am , so in June expect it to be around 9 or 10C around 7 to 8 am. June is very often sunny days, little wind , brisk mornings, and a good time to cruise the Swan River.

Good Luck,
Mike

Thanks Mike, very helpful. I have a 3/4 length (above-knee) black wool coat, but from what you are saying, it might be too heavy. If I could get by with just blazer/s, that would be easier... not sure yet, as I'm worried about going out on chilly nights, when there are functions to attend.

Open toe sandals and cotton is definitely a no-go (unless its a long sleeved cotton top!)

However I actually dont remember June being that cold (6C-14C??) its gets pretty cold at night and can get down to 0C but the days are quite warm lat tens early 20s....with the ever changing season June is now a lot dryer and slightly warmer. Even the wind dies down and its the least windiest month.

Casual days id just wear jeans and some nice tops and a jacket....id pack a bit of everytihg just to keep your bases covered!!! its so unpredictable!!

Noticed your from Seattle, so think in terms of late Autumn (fall) where you come from minus the drizzle and snow flurries and that's about what Perth is like in June. We've been there 3 times in July and have even had the aircon on cold in the car as it was over 20 degrees C. Nights - as others have said - can be quite cold and even get to zero overnight. Seeing that your in and out of warm places at night, should not be a problem.

Great city - enjoy

Great answers, friends, and thanks. It sounds like Perth is a little warmer during the day than I'd anticipated -- maybe the big temperature differentials are what I'm worried about. Plus, having to be in business clothes, makes it harder than jeans. Maybe a light-weight black windbreaker jacket with hood might do (not dressy, but I have one), as it might work for at night over blazer/business clothes, just in case? We'll also be out in Fremantle, which I suspect is windier?

Hi Freo is not windier, Perth City is one of the windiest cities in the world, but April to June are the months when there is least wind.

Good, this is all reassuring advice. I may not have to buy anything special after all. I'm very excited about coming to Perth (especially on an expenses-paid trip), because it fills in that great "southwestern gap" in my Aus travel experiences! Thanks again, everyone.
