| Dominica | How to get to Dominica? Posted: Fri November 30, 2007 07:06 PM UTC
I'm planning a trip to Dominica in march 2008, will be flying from Houston, TX. What's interesting is that I can get tix Houston - San Juan(PR) for 280USD but to get from there to Dominica will cost me almost 600 and up and that's for an hour flight!!! Please, help! The only airlines I could find that are flying from San Juan are American Eagle and LIAT. Has anyone heard of an alternative way(s) to get to Dominica, cheaper air, perhaps boat or ferry or on the back of a dolphin:-). I've been googling like crazy:) but so far haven't found much. Thanks a lot. I appreciate any help!

Afaik there's little demand to fly between the Caribbean islands, which is why it's so outrageously expensive to fly from SJU to Dominica. Have you tried from Jamaica?

Mariel, thank you for your reply. I started searching ways to get there from Jamaica and some other islands and stumbled upon a page listing reports from ALL passenger and cargo airlines serving the caribbean and to my horror found out that so many smaller companies have their planes crashed with fatalities due to poor planes maintenance. Terrible! Perhaps sometimes it's worth to pay up to a company that takes good care of its planes and employees (hence the expensive airfare), just to be on the safe side, I'm no chicken but I want to live:) Yes, it hurts to pay that much but the greedy may pay the ultimate price. Thanks again.

Amen to that.
I did some research here on VT and found that Brook's page has a tip about airfare. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/7d/9e2/ and Steve lives in Dominica so he might help you out http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1b057/9e2/ I do hope you get to go there :D I was looking for cheap airfare from SDQ to Montego Bay, Antigua, Aruba or Curacao but I found nothing :( Best of luck.

From a website: "Ferries from neighbouring islands to Dominica are a popular and fun way to travel. Guadeloupe, Martinique and St. Lucia all offer ferry service to Dominica on a regular basis.
Visit the Express des Iles website for their ferry schedule and rates" "Most flights to Dominica will connect in San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) and continue to Dominica on a domestic carrier such as LIAT or American Eagle. Alternatively, there are flights to Dominica from many Caribbean islands including Martinique, Antigua and Guadeloupe. " Hope this information is helpful!

Shalom:
We flew in with American Airlines from Miami, Florida with a changeover in San Juan. Another No ferries, they only connect to several of the small adjacent islands. No boats, only those big "love boat" type cruises. There are small air services that fly from Trinidad, it might be cheaper for you to fly to Trinidad and then fly back to Dominica. We took the ferry from Dominica to St.Lucia and from there flew to Trinidad. You might like more info on Dominica itself at http://www.visit-dominica.com/ However you get there it will be worth the effort. Martin
