| Tijuana | Crossing into the US Posted: Thu November 29, 2007 03:37 AM UTC
How is it to cross back into the US while walking? Are the lines long? Do they let most people through? Do they search a lot of people?

Walking isn't to bad. I've gotten through in about 10 minutes, but it might depend on the time of day. Driving on the other hand is a huge wait at the Tijuana crossing any time of day or night. Customs has x-ray machines, like the ones at the airport, that you have to run anything you're carrying through.
One word of advice: Bring a passport. Although you can get back across with a drivers license, it's much easier and quicker if you have a passport. Feliz viaje, Marc

Walking across the US/Mexican border in San Ysidro can take as long as driving across, without the comfort of being able to sit in your car.
The amount of time it takes to cross, either by car or walking depends upon the time of day, the security alert in effect and the demeanor of the person crossing. During the weekdays, early mornings are usually busiest, but it can be a long wait at anytime. They let everyone through as long as the proper ID is produced and there is nothing suspicious about the person crossing. Walking across, there is at least one "X-Ray" type search of bags and person, but since 9/11 more commonly two and at times, during "High Security Alerts," three. If there is anything suspicious about a person, that person can be sent to "Secondary" where there is a process of a physical body search that can include a trip to the hospital for a body cavity search. This "secondary" search is not usual, and the hospital option is quite rare. Driving across, there are "sensors" that alert Customs to suspicious situations and it is not unusual for the Officer to visually search the car as well as requiring a proper ID of all persons in the car. If there is anything suspicous, they can send the person and the car into "Secondary" where a more thorough search is performed. However, most people crossing at San Ysidro, face nothing more than a waiting line and most people pass through without incident.
