I am visiting Penang without husband but with 2 children aged 11 and 12.Is it safe travelling around? I have also heard about the taxis ripping off tourists so I am rather apprehensive as to how I am to get around. As I'll be putting up at Batu Ferringhi for 2 nights and 2 nights in G Hotel(for the shopping and the food), I was wondering whether are there any public buses going to the attractions like Penang Hill and the Kek Lo Si Temple, the Snake Temple? Are they reliable?Or is there anywhere I can hire a driver to take us around for the day?I'll be grateful for an quick reply as I'm leaving in 2 days time.

Hello, There are public buses going to attractions as well as different parts of penang.I dont think you will have much trouble. You can even ask at the hotel you are staying at, they are quite friendly people. good luck

penang is a safe place to travel, dont worry
however, no matter where you are, precautions comes first

yes, there are 2 major companies operating in penang.
and they are reliable.

to avoid any hassles, rent a car.
or just hire a driver.

if you need a driver, you may contact me, i will be able to arrnage them for you

i am not a driver nor travel agent by profession.
however, i have got many tips/helps from VT and I think it is time to me to give mine.

My friend and I stayed at Batu Ferringhi area and we took public transportation everywhere. There are bus stops in front of the hawker centers near the night market and the Golden Sands hotel. We went to Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple, Khoo Kongsi, and more. All by bus.

We found it safe to travel around. Just be careful, like you would wherever you travel to. :)

As the others have said, Penang is perfectly safe to travel around. As far as taxi's go just ask the price before you hop in. They are meant to use their meters but don't. You will find they all charge a standard rate and most are friendly and happy to engage in conversation.
Have a look at some tips on my VT page and also visit the Penang travel forum www.penangtravelforum.com for more info.

Penang is a wonderful place for a holiday!
