Luxor Here I go again,
Posted: Sun November 25, 2007 03:39 PM UTC
Having been twice before you might think I should have the knowledge I seek, but this time I'm bringing my "11+13 year olds" so I am going to try to pack everything I've seen in two visits into one week so they can see and learn as much as possible. Previously I have been laid back/relaxed or truth be told a bit lazy, choosing to soak up the joy of Luxor itself rather than hitting the ground running every morning.
Or like spending 7 hours at Karnak then wondering where the day has gone.
This year I'm going for a crack of dawn start each morning. So by mid-afternoon we can stop for a relaxed lunch on the Corniche or I can indulge myself in conversation at the poolside while the kids play after a very busy morning. Aaaahh bliss.
So to the question.
Do all the sites have similar opening times and if so what time is that?

Here is an excellent tip I found from Miriam who is married and if she's a lucky girl might be living in Luxor by now. God ettermiddag Miriam.

Here is a tip for a well spent relaxing day: Bring swimwear, go felucca from right below Luxor temple. say you want to go to Crocodile Island. Have lunch, sunbathe and use the swimming pool there before you sail back at sunset.
OH YES!
If anyone living in Luxor knows the Felucca Man “Captain Tayib” tell him to look out for me I will need him for a couple of days while I'm there. 5th December for a week.

Peace and blessings...Jim

LOL! Micheal you need to explaine "BOOKMARK" to me. I have seen it numerous times and it makes me crosseyed. What do you mean with it??

Jim! Thanks for your tips, but what was your question????
How to do Egypt in a week with 2 young teenagers?

I would go for 2/3 days Cairo. First visit the Pharaonic Village. It is a kind of leisure park that will show your kids the history of Egypt in a half day visit. First they will go in a boat sailing among several small islands and they will be shown some animated panorama's about ancient Egyptian life and culture. After that they will visit a minor kind of replica of Karnak Temple, a house of noble people in Ancient Egypt, they can visit a small souk, have their pictures taken in ancient Egyptian costumes. They can have a taste of fahteer, a kind of Egyptian pancakes, they can see them baked in an ancient kind of oven. They can see how the Pyramids were build, the mummification proces, images of Napoleon's invasion of Egypt, some islamic art and a quite accurate replica of Tut anch Amun's tomb the way it was found. If you are lucky your kids can take part in the animations. If you look at my travelogues of Cairo or Egypt you will find one about the Pharaonic village and see my daughter as an ancient Egyptian prinses.

This is fun but it will give your kids an average idea of what to expect and understand it more. It will take about half a day, reserve the remains of the day for a visit to the Egyptian museum to see the treasures of King Tut and the Mummies. Spend the evening with a fellucah sail or a visit to the Khan el Khalili.
Next day I would go for the Pyramids. Starting with Memphis and the huge statue of Ramses II, followed by Sakarrah. The Step Pyramid has enough to offer for yound kids. Have lunch on your way to Gizeh; there is a nice bedouin style open air restaurant with swimming pool that serves a lunch buffet on the road from Sakarrah to Gizeh.
The afternoon to spend around the Pyramids, maybe a camelride but bargain yourself a good price and stick with it! And stay with your children! From 1pm the Great Pyramid can be entered, but there is always another Pyramid open for visitors. The Solarboat museum is very nice as well.
Have diner in the Pyramid area in order to catch the sound and light show.

I would take the night train to Luxor or Aswan and have a nice cruise between the two cities. I wouldn't miss the sound and light shows in Karnak (Luxor) and Philae (Aswan). A Carriage ride in Luxor is also kind of spectacular or a hot air balloon trip above the West Bank in Luxor. Or do the Valley of Kings by bycicle or donkey. Or have a camel ride along New Qurn on the West Bank.
In Aswan the Nubean Museum is very nice, but maybe your kids are museum tired by now. A visit to a Nubean village is nice, but you can be attacked by candy seeking kids.
Best thing in Aswan is a fellucah sail around Elephantine Island. Or watch them sailing from the terrace of the Old Catteract Hotel....

Hi Dora,
Thank you for your information. I always enjoy your posts they are so full of useful tips. I did not intend to go to Cairo but I am now tempted by the Pharaonic Village and a trip to the Great Pyramid, I went twice in 1977 myself. I talk too much and confused the original question which was. At Luxor what time do the Sights and and monuments open in the morning.
TY M+M now I also know what bookmark is for.
Shukran.
Peace and Blessings to all.
Jim.

LOL,

Just answering this question will "bookmark" it! That is how I keep track of the thread. In your "notices" departement.

I have visited the "Pharaonic Village" several times. Once with dear friends of us and we enjoyed it very much. The second time with my daughter and her (nowadays) husband and they loved it too. We came around a few Egyptian school classes on a school holiday. It is concerned to be an educational place and I think it is! Your kids will love it!!
My daughter, not just a kid, got dressed as a princes, sat in a carried chair while her husband tried the bow, they had their pictures taken with Anubis masks like the ancient priests and they went into king Tut's grave as if they were the ones to discover it. Such great fun!
