| Niagara Falls | NIagar Falls in late Dec. Is it worth the effort? Posted: Sat November 24, 2007 03:58 PM UTC
I shall be visiting Niagara Falls in the last week of December 2007. People have been advising me against it because everything will be frozen that time. Please advice. Also, I am traveling from India on a US tourist visa. Can I apply for a Canadian visa from the Rainbow bridge just to see the fall from Canadian side? Thanks.

I don't think it'll be frozen in late-Dec. It's more likely to be frozen in late winter.

Yes, Yes, Yes. While most of your friends and people you meet will have only seen the falls in the summer, you'll have a chance to see it in the winter. December is not cold enough to freeze the falls. It hasn't frozen since 1911. But, you'll find a glaze of ice where-ever the spray lands. It will be a wonderland. If the sun comes out, it will glisten like glass everywhere around the falls. Through it all, the water will still be rushing over the precipice in a 6-10 foot (2-3 meter) layer of water, looking for the world as if it'll drain the lakes upstream in another 10 minutes. Then you'll realize that you've be watching for nearly a 1/2 hour. It's the grandest sight you'll ever see. I consider it the #1 Natural Wonder of the World.
To miss it would be a shame. If I only go once more, I want it to be in the middle of Winter, i.e., end of January or early February. You'll never regret your decision.
