Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Cabarete Canyoning and other 'adventure' sports
Posted: Fri November 23, 2007 09:29 AM UTC
Hi, I'm planning to visit Cabarete early January. Besides hitting the beaches, I'd also love to do some 'adventure' sports. Mountain biking is high on the list, but I'm also a sucker for canyoning. I checked activecabarete.com and it's mentioned there, but I can't find any details. Does anyone know if it is possible to go on a canyoning trip in Cabarete or anywhere else in the DR?

Other tips always welcome!

Many thanks...

Afaik you can do canyoning in Jarabacoa. Check out http://www.ranchobaiguate.com/
Rancho Baiguate also offers more adventure tourism.

Jarabacoa is about a 2-hour bus drive from Puerto Plata.

I am in cabarete at this very second typing at the internet cafe. There are at least 5 tour companies in town with canyoning trips prices range from 65 to 100 dollars. regardless the prices you see on the internet or signs or in your tea leaves the price will be at least 25% higher than advertised. This town is a truely caveat emptor (buyer beware) If you are comming for the wind it is currently crappy but apparently will improve by January. If you are planning on learning any water sports. ie kite boarding windsurfing surfing etc. this is not the place to go. There is a vicous shore break even inside the lagoon and the water is very confussed. Even the instructors say if you can kite/board/surf here you can do it anywhere in the world. They advertise mountain biking but I think most of it is guided and most of it is on roads. There is some single track but my understanding is that there is not much. I am going by hearsay I haven't done it.
good luck sk
