It is usually not a problem but be advised that the NFL SuperBowl is being held in Phoenix this year and full bookings will probably start the last weekend of January.

There is a convention center in Downtown Phoenix and relatively few hotels, so they do occasionally sell out. Also both the basketball arena and baseball stadium are Downtown, so big games could potentially sell it out.
If you're going to see the city, I'd strongly suggest that you stay near Downtown Scottsdale or Downtown Tempe. Downtown Phoenix is beginning to emerge as a destination, but doesn't really have enough there as of yet to make it a good place to stay. But, yeah, don't even try to get out there for the Super Bowl now. The hotels that are still available are going for about $300/night for 1- or 2-stars, and rental cars are going for something like $100/day. Staying in Tucson is also out because the Super Bowl is during our gem show, and all hotels are full here as well. hth
