Cairns Crabbing for muddies
Posted: Wed November 21, 2007 09:09 PM UTC
I will be in Cairns for 5 days in Dec 2007. I love crab and wanted to try to catch some muddies. Is the season open then and can I rent (hire?) a crab pot or two from a bait store? Can you do this without going on a charter?

It is our official wet season here in Cairns and most of our creeks, rivers & beaches are infested with mozzies, crocodiles, stingers and other nasties I strongly recommend you get in touch with cairnstourism.com. Have fun in my home town.

Hi there,
The season will be open for muddies. You are only allowed to catch males and they have to be a certain size.
You can catch these off a few bridges around town. My friends sons have done this. You can do this with hand line. These bridges aren't around crocs, mozzies etc...rather safe:)( Always be careful though, Crocs do hang around these water ways, don't go paddling:))BUT if it is pouring with rain, there may be too much water:)
Pots aren't really expensive, you will only need one or two.But you will need to go out on a boat.
One shop in town that will be able to help you with your questions is BCF on Mulgrave road. ( Boating Camping and Fishing) there are many more, check out the phone book online.
There is a Catch a Crab tour here....I don't know the name and I haven't a phone book in front of me. Google this and see what happens.

Have a great time in Paradise:)
