When we were in Petra, there is a very nice Movenpick right across the road from the Petra entrance which would be handy for you to get into the site early - opened at 7am when we were there in November, 2006. The other Movenpick is on top of the hill, about 10 mins from Petra but I think it may have great views of the site from above, but I would double check with them by e-mail. I think it may be a case of very nice convenience versus nicer views but a bit out of town. The weather is a bit chilly early on in the morning but gets hot later on in the day so take a fleece or jacket with t'shirt underneath. Wear good walking shoes for climbing those steps to the Monastery and Altar, although there is the option of going up by donkey!
