Porto 2 hotels to choose from
Posted: Wed November 21, 2007 11:34 AM UTC
Hello. I am already book with Residence Residencial dos Aliados which is across from the town hall, just off Avenida dos Aliados. It's 50 euro a night. Just read some things about Hotel Peninsular Rua Sa Fa Bandeira, 21 - 4000-433. I read it's really a great location across from the train station and it may be cheaper. Which one is in a better location. We will mostly be hanging out by the river and I do want to go to Via Catarina shopping center. Which hotel is better? And does anyone know if Hotel Peninsular has a website or if I can book it on-line?

Hi.
I spent a few nights in the Residencial dos Aliados last March and was very satisfied. Only the breakfast was a bit poor, but the rest was great - clean, antique architecture of the building, in the middle of the beautiful Avenida dos Aliados, I was surprised that it was so cheap for a hotel positioned on the main avenue. I don't know the other hotel that you've mentioned, but the Sao Bento train station is also very close to the residence dos Aliados, just across the street and a few steps up the avenue. The river and Ribeira is within a walking distance, downhill.

Enjoy!

Hello,

I don't know the first hotel but I love the Hotel peninsular which is also just across from the train station so is very central indeed. The rooms at the front are spacious, clean and have heating. The breakfast is very good and served in a buffet style so you have got a lot to choose from and can eat as much as you want, it is included in the price. It is an art deco hotel and has a certain faded grandeur about it and the staff are very friendly.

It does not have a website but they do speak English at reception. You get a discount for paying cash.

Enjoy Porto wherever you stay.

Best wishes

Hello,

I don't know any of them but I can tell you that both locations are very nice and just in the middle of the old city. Choose the hotel by price and quality, because I think you will make an excellent option.

Bye and I hope you enjoy "my" city.

This may be already out of date for you however we stayed at the Aliados in October 2007. It is OK for a few days and if you are travelling alone. Two people in the rooms and you are always bumping into each other that is the room is too small.

However the location of the place is terrific-couldn't be more central. The other hotel by the train station is not that far away although I am not sure how close it would be to a Metro stop. The Aliados is directly next to a Metro stop that takes you more or less directly to the airport.

As in all these things there is always a trade off of positive and negative..

We always stay at the Peninsular - fantastic place, very friendly and ultra helful staff! Cheap, yet comfortable, most rooms recently modernised. Sadly, the historic lift has gone (but it is to be preserved!), but the place still oozes character. 30 seconds walk from Sao Bento railway station & metro, 2-3 minutes from some truly excellent reataurants.
