I want to go shopping to Como on the 8. december 2007. I heard yesterday, that in Italy there is a public holiday on this day. Are the shops although open?

Maybe. On a bank holiday the shops are close (as Maurizio said), but december 8th is yet Xmas season. So maybe some shops are open. It depends town by town. I do not know about Como.
