| Johannesburg | New Years Eve in Johannesburg Posted: Sun November 18, 2007 06:03 AM UTC
Hi guys,
I'll be in Joburg on NYE and am looking for something memorable to do! Can anyone let me know what events are on, what would be a special, unique NYE celebration? Cheers! P |

I think your best bet will be to do a google search for Johannesburg and see what you are interested in. Newtown should have a bit going on. There are lots of restaurants, clubs, jazz clubs like Bassline; theatres etc. Montecasino is popular. Decide on something and then just check the area. All the areas are not safe. Stay out of Hillbrow and Yeoville. You can easily become the victim of a fridge or washing machine being thrown down from a balcony.

Thanks for that reply!
So I take it there's no big public (safe) celebration (nothing similar to what's happening in Kirstenbosch in Cape town?)?

Nothing big has been advertised. Hillbrow has always been the venue for the big NYE party. It has never been safe in Hillbrow on NYE. Even before it became a crime area people use to get terribly drunk, lots for fighting and there were really people throwing appliances from their balconies. Most of the parties happen at country clubs ( very stiff, black tie stuff) and then all the restaurants and clubs will have their onw celebrations. Keep an eye on the newspapers. The Star and the Sunday Times. If something big is going to happen you will find it in there. You can google them they both have a website.

The Sunday Times published a list of "Many ways to bid 2007 farewell" on 16 Dec 2007. You can find it at http://www.thetimes.co.za/PrintEdition/Metro/Artic
Have fun!
