| Santo Domingo | Searching budget hotels near Zona Colonial to cook in Posted: Fri November 16, 2007 03:57 AM UTC
Hi friends, This is a question about modest budget hotels near the Zona Colonial. My wife and I would really like a quiet place so we can stay in and relax if we want to and cook our own meals in the room. Do any hotels you know of have the usual amenities but also provide cooking facilities on-site or better yet in the room? Thanks, Jeremy.

Does it have to have cooking facilities?
I know of a place called La Aldaba that's run by a Swiss (I think) that has an electric stove in the room with 2 plates to cook. However, they don't provide pans, pots, etc. so those you have to buy at any nearby store (there are plenty). They charged as of 2002 500 DOP per room per night but you could haggle the price if you stay long enough. The rooms are clean and cleaned every other day I think and there's no lockouts. As I remember it it was located at Arzobispo Meriño and at a short walk from Parque Colón and El Conde street. I'll see if I can dig up the contact info (they have no website).

Forgot to add: 1 US = 33 DOP more or less.

Nevermind my question on my first post, and sorry to flood this post hehe.
I found this place called Plaza Florida Suites that offers rooms with kitchen, equipped with a fridge, stove with oven, pans, and even plates and cutlery. Their site is only in Spanish and they don't have their prices so you'll have to e-mail them and ask. Their contact info is: Plaza Florida Suites Tel: 809 541 3957 Fax: 809 381 0502 E-mail: reservaciones@plazafloridasuites.com.do Web: www.plazafloridasuites.com.do They're not exactly located IN Zona Colonial but in Gazcue, which is a good place to live at and at walking distance from the Old Town.

Why not post it here or better yet, on your SD page? Then everyone can take advantage of it :)

Thanks for all of your suggestions, you're very kind. Our idea is to save money because we're staying a whole month. That's why we want a kitchen. Also because we're newlyweds so we want to practice "playing house" ;). La Aldaba sounds promising. Plaza Florida's lack of prices and fancy web site makes me think it's probably expensive, but we'll see. Our goal is to find a monthly rate 500-600 USD. My wife is going to check out La Residence on Calle Danae, which has some sort of shared kitchen on the third floor.

Congratulations!!!!!!!
I haven't been able to dig up the contact info of La Aldaba. Sorry :( You 2 are probably better off at La Residence. Calle Danae is at walking distance from Zona Colonial and El Malecón. Tell your wife to negotiate for a good rate, since you're staying more than a week it's more than OK to haggle down the price ;) http://www.hotelresidencia.com Let me know if you want to have more options to look at and have a great trip/honeymoon :D

I heard back today from PlazaFLorida. Sounds nice, but it's too high for my blood:
"Good afternoon, i write to inform you our rates, in junior suite is US$98 dollars per night, with tax and breakfast included; kitchen already equipped, internet wriless, cable tv, air conditioned. Regards, Rhadairis Muñoz, reservation department, Plaza Florida Suites. (809)-412-1212."

I have stayed in Plaza Florida before. It is not a fancy place, but isnt crappy place. Of course.. when I stayed it wasnt this price. Rooms are big enough for a long stay and they have almost everything in their kitchen.
You might want to consider to stay in this place because it's in the pure heart of the city which means NOT far from the Colonial Zone, and not far from the major Avenues. A major supermarket and mall is by walking distance too. Public transportacion is a step away from Plaza Florida, also next to them there is a nice restaurant called Bora Bora (Spanish food - wonderful!).. I woulg go with Plaza Florida for a long stay! Truly recommended. ;)
