You will see a ticket on my hop page. There are trans twice or three times a week. You also can reach it by going border-to-border (buy Beijing-ZamynUud or Bejing-Erlian+Erlian-ZamynUud + ZamynUud-UB).
The least expensive option is most likely to buy Beijing-ZamynUud ticket on Mongolian train, than buy the ZamynUud-UB in ZamynUud for Tugrik. The travel is about 20-something hours by train. Bus is pain in the @ss.

I did it last August by train and I enjoyed the trip. Everything was really nice in the Mongolian train (I will post a pic). Beside usual trains from UB to Beijing, you can take a train to Hohhot, stop don't remember where in China (not far from the border anyway)and from there by bus or train to Beijing. Border procedures were made easier and faster, so you don't waste a lot of time as it used to. I found a company that can arrange everything in UB; it's located in the same building where you buy international train tickets. If you need more info drop me a line, I'll try to find company's name and telephone number.
Enjoy your trip!

Some more ideas.
If you are talking about the Naadam festival, http://www.discovermongolia.mn/tours/Cultural_tour that would be a tough thing to get the train. Just in case if there is no flight, no train to UlaanBaatar (I mean there are flights and trains, just during Naadam everything could be sold out from China), you may go around Mongolia to Ulaan-Ude and than go south - there are many trains from Russia to Mongolia. You will need a Russian visa (35 Euro if you are also a EU citizen + letter of support). Do it timely with www.waytorussia.com Also because of things being tough, you may decide to just go by train all the way - it's 100 Euro round-trip from Bratislava (+sleeper) to Mongolain border. Check out CITY-STAR page of Helmut: http://citystarticket.blogspot.com, that gives you the idea about how inexpensive really the travel on Transsib is - provided you have the right ticket.

Hi,
Just be careful that you book things in advance. The naadam period here in Ulaanbaatar books up really quickly, and in 2008 it is also the Olympic games in Beijing. Everything will be chocablok! If you do decide to travel on the train, it's 1200km and it's a really pleasant ride. Takes 30 hours. When you get to UB, consider going to the countryside to see one of the local naadams. The one in the capital has impressive ceremonies but is quite touristy and difficult to get up close and personal. The local naadams are great - everyone is on horseback, wearing traditional costume, and you can see the activities up close. If you want any more help, search Mongolian Resorts. My contact is on that website. Jennie.

The train takes 30 hours but you need to book way in advance to get a direct ticket. You can take local trains but that takes longer, 2-3 days.
there are also buses to the border where you can change and catch a local train, again 2-3 days. avoid the naadam in ulaanbaatar and find one in the countryside, more authentic more info is here: www.shaggyyak.com

33 hours by the Mongolia Express (the Chinese train) and 1 1/2 hrs flying time. Daily flights from beijing, lalternating between Air china and the Mongolian outfit. Easy.
