| Nürnberg | Nurnberg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber Posted: Wed November 14, 2007 05:57 PM UTC
Four of us are traveling from Nurnberg to Rothenburg. We plan to use a Bayern ticket on the trains. Can I use the Bayern ticket to travel from Nurnberg to Rothenburg?
I believe we need to only take regional trains. Are these trains all regional? RB & RE The German train internet site (www.bahn.de) says that some of these trains are unavailable. Does this mean that the fares are unavailable? There will still be seats on the train, correct? Thanks in advance for your help! Danke! |

Did that trip a couple of years ago, probably have to change trains at least once, there should be plenty of room - no need to book in advance. RE and RB trains are OK with a Bayern ticket, just start your journey after 09:30am. Have fun.

Hello,
yes, you can use the Bayern ticket on the route Nürnberg - Rothenburg. The ticket is valid at all regional trains (including RB & RE trains). www.bahn.de just says that there are no infos available on prices. But as you are using the Bayern ticket you don't have to bother about prices anyway. The trains will be available and there should also be vacant seats, if you avoid rush hours. Regards, Elena

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e From: N To: Rothenburg ob der Tauber and select as means of transport "only local transport". This will ensure connections you can use with the Bavaria Ticket or the suggested alternative (see below). As this trip is inside the local public transport network of Nuremberg and area, the VGN, you can also use VGN offers. http://www.vgn.de/ A good deal is the VGN TagesTicket Plus. EUR 13,80 for the whole VGN network. It is good for up to 6 persons, but only 2 of them must be 18 years or older. Thus with 4 adults you would need 2 of them. 2 x 13,80 = EUR 27,60. Thus 0,60 more than the Bavaria Ticket. BUT - the VGN TagesTicket Plus is also valid on weekdays before 9am (unlike the Bavaria Ticket) - if bought on a Saturday the VGN TagesTicket Plus is also good for Sunday Both tickets cover regional trains, U-Bahn and trams (in Nuremberg) and buses. Actually the Bavaria Ticket includes the VGN and all other such networks in Bavaria.

We did this 6 weeks ago - easy trip. Change in Ansbach, the train is waiting for you across the platform. Change in Steinach - go downstairs and to the farthest track and the train is waiting. A very modern two car train. Coming back, the Rothenberg train is often late. It has to make two 15 minute runs in an hour so don't worry if it doesn't come on time for the return. You'll make the train from Steinach.
Note - it may be a 10 minute walk from the station to the walls of the Old City, as all the tour books state, but to get where you want to be is a hell of a lot more than 10 minutes of hiking. Take a cab from the station.

If we have big baggages. Is it hard to carry them with us along the way from Nuremberg to Rothenburg and back to Frankfurt on the same day ? It seems inconvenient to us to take them upstair and downstair when changing the platform. Is there any locker at that station ?

One more question: Does the Bayern ticket work on Sundays?
Thanks for all of your helpful replies.

Yes, the Bayern ticket is valid on Sundays. www.bahn.de says:
This ticket is valid from Monday to Sunday for one day of your choice. On workdays from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day. On Saturday and Sunday and bank holidays from 0 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day. Regards, Elena

ajphilly - these are small stations. the run to Rothenberg is a one track spur. I don't know obviously but I would suspect these type of places don't offer storage facilities. The only place you have to go up and down stairs is for the last leg to Rothenberg in Steinach. It's like the Toonerville Trolley. The driver will wait for you. He is only working thirty minutes out of every hour, what's a minute here or there.
The big problem will be the bags in Rothenberg itself. A small station located 10 minutes walk from the town walls and further from the center of the old city. That will be your problem site.

As I said above, I didn't know obviously. Lockers will be of great assistance to you. Do make sure of when the access to the lockers ends each day. We trained out about 1800 and while the outside WCs were open, the station looked pretty empty. Everyone was standing outside waiting for the train, nobody inside sitting.
