| Ålesund | cruise excursion Posted: Wed November 14, 2007 10:07 AM UTC
Hi everybody
I am going to Alesund for 5 hrs by cruise ship next June but to date no excursions are offered by cruise company. What is best to see in suchashort time? Is it possible to take an excursion to Geiranger Fjord? Thanks |

The little town is very beautiful, so an unguided tour of it is a very nice way to spend the time.

Geiranger Fjord is a half days drive away from Alesund, about 200km+ so you wont make it, pity. Alesund on the other hand has a lot to offer, aquarium, cod liver oil museum etc. The Tourist office should be able to help. I would think you would need transport. Go to my travel pages on Alesund.

There is much to see without requiring transport. Alesund is a delightful town to wander around, enjoying
the charming buildings and attractive harbour. I obtained a leaflet from the Tourist Office describing a suggested walking trail route with descriptions of some of the buildings and other points of interest. Also visit the Art Nouveau Centre, which introduces the distinctive architecture dating from the town's rebuilding after the fire of 1904. Walk through the park and up the path and steps to the viewpoint at the Fjellstua cafe on mount Aksla to experience the superb view shown on Adagio 1's travel pages.

Thanks and regards my friends. We will surely enjoy our time in Alesund. Pity we'll be there for just a short time in such a beautiful place.

Hi,
I just put up a few pictures of Ålesund taken about a week ago. It is a lovely place. We you get off the ship, head left towards the Jugendstyle (Art Nouveau) center for tourist information and a good place to begin walking. The Cube museum next to the Jugendstyle center is sort of ..developing.. but has a few really nice paintings from the general area. There are nice cafes in this part of town and the Ålesund Church. The church is not particularly old but the neighborhood is beautiful. The real attraction in Ålesund is the city itself and the lovely buildings. The museums are well worth visiting but on a nice day just walking around Ålesund is very, very fine. Avoid the Kremmerhuset underground mall scene unless you become dripping wet.
