Sierra Leone Dangers

Could you or someone be more specific about dangers in Sierra Leone? A family member may be traveling there in February as a part of a charitable group's efforts with counseling for injured patients, inspection of the medical facilities, etc. My understanding is that they will be in direct contact with top governmental officials while in Sierra Leone, if that makes a difference.
Thanks for any feedback.

Hi Mike,
I was in Sierra Leone for three weeks in September 07. My time there was great, I didn't feel at risk at all. If your family member observes normal precautions in the cities, as anywhere else in the world, they will be fine. Take care watching bags as petty theft can be a problem, especially at the ferry port and on the ferry going from Lungi to Freetown. I would recommend staying in Lungi, near the airport, for the night and travelling to Freetown in daylight (most flights to Lungi arrive at night.) If they are with Government officials I am sure they will be well looked after.
They should have a wonderful time,
best wishes, Joe
