| New Delhi | Delhi in January? Posted: Mon November 12, 2007 02:40 PM UTC
Hi everyone,
I am planning to spend around 3 weeks in Delhi from the end of December onwards. As far as I can tell, it's the coldest time of the year - but how cold does it actually get? Being from Cape Town, and having lived in Europe, I know there can be a huge difference between winters! So, can anyone give me advice as to whether I will need to bring boots / scarves / gloves / a winter coat, or will a light jacket and some sensible shoes do? Also, is there much going on in and around the city that time of year? Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks, Karen |

A light jacket will be fine, plus you may want to bring one pair of shoes that are not sandals. Delhi can get down to the high single digits (C) at night in winter, but in the daytime it's still shirtsleeves weather.

yes, pretty mild by British standards.
I pressume you are stopping in a hotel as houses in India do not have central heating and dont really put any/much heating on. they just wear more clothing. Have fun PS--thats my picture at New Delhi, Taj Mahal hotel Bal

Hi K,
From Christmas onwards there is too much fog in Delhi and almost all North India comes in the grip of fog.Due to much fog in the evening and all night it gets clear after late morning.Visibility becomes too low that many flights are delayed at New Delhi Airport and trains also gets late and sometimes cancelled too.In terms of tempreture single digit may not be worry but it is cold wind that make you shiver.Once a chill cold wave starts it grips the whole region for several days. I am not suppose to make you feel scary but just sharing you weather of my city in the last week of December that I am experiencing since last four decades. But this time winter has its own charm to sit before wood fire with friends and enjoy drink and food. You are welcome to have local food with us in the cold winter around Christmas. Best wishes Uma shanker

Ps; However the arid region of Rajasthan remains free of Fog but definately too cold.If you are in Delhi by that time and it gets much foggy that avoid going Agra by Road but go by train.Due to less visibilty on highways it is safe to travel by train.
Best wishes Uma shanker

hi I just came back tuesday 2nd of Jan from new Delhi my wife and I been there 12 days and visit all around north region with a single tour . the weather was warm but espicialy in delhi was very dusty not foggy in day time 18-23 degrees but at night and early morning 5-12 but is better to have a lite jacket or warm clothing.in one of your replys someone wrote foggy but is not true to be honest our original plan to stay there was 22 days but that was so disgusting all over the cities were dirt and dust and poorness. you cannot believe it how the majority of people living there that they do everything in same place cooking ,eating ,peing ,pooing ,etc cawos, dogs, monkys, camels, all animals in same place in 12 days we had just 2 time resturant foods and the most time we had jus toast and nutella wich we broght it from our place if you like your health is better to change your plan and do not waste your time and money we came back 10 days earlier and we are never, ever going back to India and not forgot to drink boiled or bottled watter. the other thing in south of India especially in goa the fundamentalist locals trite all tourists to beat and even killing if they visit this city between 26 dec 07 till unknown time just be very careful if you go there. If you don’t believe those things I can send lots of pictures for you.
Thanks
