| Luxembourg | Living in Luxembourg Posted: Mon November 12, 2007 12:00 PM UTC
Good morning all
I am moving to Luxembourg a few weeks before March 2008, I'm starting a 5 months internship there. I have thousands of doubts about this country, but the ones that most concern me at this stage are: 1)Is it a safe place? 2)How expensive is it?Can someone give a realistic and clear idea of how much does a single person spends per month? 3)Is it easy to find part-time jobs? 4)People do speak both French and German,or depends on the area? Thank you so much for your kind attention and hopefully for your answers:) Wih you all a nice day, Luísa |

I can only address parts of your question. I feel it is very, very safe. As for languages, probably nearly every European language, including English, is spoken, at least in the area around Luxembourg City. You might specify where in Luxembourg you will be staying. The Luxembourg City area would probably be very expensive. The outlying areas and towns should be much cheaper. Gary

You are welcome. The reason so many languages should be spoken in the Luxembourg City area is that it was home to the forerunner of the European Union, the European Community or European Commission, or something to that effect. I hope you enjoy your stay there. Gary

Well at this stage languages are the least of my worries:)
I'll be working in the Jean Monnet building in Kirchberg, do you have any tips for reasonable priced accommodation? Thanks

I never really spent much time outside of Luxembourg City, I don't have an immediate knowledge of the outlying countryside. If you would like, I can give you some web assistance though. I've been in the situation of moving to new places in Europe, so I know how unsettling it can be. Gary

I took a very quick look on the web for the location of Kirchberg. It was exactly where I thought it was. The area is home to the offices and ministries of some of the European Union entities that I spoke of in an earlier e-mail. I did find one apartment search link that will at least give you a general idea of SOME of the rental prices in Luxembourg City. There are other sites, and other options available. It will just take a bit of time to find them. If your internship is in conjunction with a University program, you might be able to contact the coordinators office for possible housing solutions. I know in London, some of the schools had housing that they let to students and interns. If all else fails, you might contact the people you will be working with during your internship. They also might have a person that coordinates such things, if not, maybe one of the secretaries would be able to help you. The link is : http://www.atHome.lu. The page is in French, but will translate to English or German. You can just click on the "Rent" block. Gary

Look at the following website: http://webplaza.pt.lu/~wfs. It is housing for Interns and Students. I knew such a website would exist. I did not expect to find it this quickly though. Let me know if the site is going to meet your needs. I also have several maps of Luxembourg City and the links for the city busses, the trains, and the airline site. I will send this info later, so you can concentrate on the housing issues first. Gary

The web page is in French. You can type "webplaza.pt.lu/~wfs" in the Google search box & then click "translate this page" when the link comes up. If you speak French, I just wasted 7 seconds of your time, while you were reading this, lol. Gary

You might look at the following website: http://www.tefl.com. It doesn't pertain to Luxembourg, but it might be of some use for you later on. Gary

I'm glad I could help. Were you able to find housing through the sites I sent you ? I wish you success during your internship. Luxembourg should be a little quiet, but enjoyable for you. If you need any more assistance let me know. Gary

Yes,your tips have been very helpful!:)
I alredy got accomodation, but not in the wfs residences - I had to wait for the pappers to apply to it, and I'm kind of an "antecipation-freak"!;) Well I'm looking forward to move in, and to enjoy the Central Europe location - it will be much easier to travel around! Wish a great week Gary, and it's never enough to thank you for your good-will and great tips! All the best, Luísa
