Machu Picchu 4 day Inca trail
Posted: Mon November 12, 2007 03:49 AM UTC
I would like to know how does a hiking day look like.
How many hours I have to walk a day? Where do I spend
the night. Do we sleep in tent or cabin? What if somebody cant
keep up with the rest of the group?

28 miles, 4 days--probably about 7 miles a day. tents. porters go ahead and set up for meals, etc. not sure what happens you don't keep up? i'm sure they can't leave you there. but it is a controlled hike for sure. when it's time to go, you go. time to camp, you camp. hope that helps. oh, and book way in advance.

I hiked the 4 day Inca trail this July, and it was very manageable for someone in moderate shape. We usually hiked about 6 miles a day when we had steep ascents, although one day we covered roughly 12 miles because the trail was fairly flat. Our guide gave us the option of hiking fast for 3-4 hours and then relaxing at camp, or hiking slowly to moderately for about 6-7 hours. We chose the second option, and it was very reasonable.

I'm in moderate shape myself (not amazingly fit, not a couch potato), and found the hike to be doable. We did have a few older hikers who were a bit out of shape, and one of the guides stayed behind with them to make sure they could finish the trek at a slower pace.

Overall, it's a great trek and I highly recommend it!
