| Leiria | Budget Travel want to go to Pedrogão Beach for New Year Posted: Sun November 11, 2007 04:48 AM UTC
Hi,
I plan to go to Leiria -Pedrogão Beach this coming New Year, may be 7 days. I am on the budget and never go to Portugal. I will fly from New York. Anybody know, How to get there? How much for the budget hotel, transportation and Food? How about the weather in December? Cold/Rain? Safe for solo lady? Any reply will be appricated. Thanks, Luna |

Don't worry about food and accomodations in Portugal. Those are less expensive than in other European places. A meal could cost around 10 euro or less.
You can go to Leiria by direct bus from Lisbon. Sorry; I don't know where you have to take it. I stayed at Pensao Leirense in the town center. It was a cheap place, but they tried to spare the heating. In the winter Leiria is colder than Lisbon.

Why Pedrogão? Are you absolutely decided? One entire week in December? Who is going to make the funeral after you die with tedium? Unless you come for surf (or a planned love affair) I think you should reconsider. The beach is empty, cold and dangerous in winter.
There's a lot of excellent things to see and do near Leiria, and winter is a cheap occasion. The weather is uncertain, but you may get some sunny days and not so cold as you are used to. I live in the area and wrote a lot about the best places around. You may check those pages and get a more clear idea. About safety, a wise stay will have no special risks. Maybe a couple of opportunities to stop being so "solo". But it will always be up to you. Remark: Two years ago I went with my wife to a New Year's Eve party in S. Pedro de Muel, less than 20km from Pedrógão, and much more interesting (but not the best - that's Nazaré). It was not cheap (I think that dinner-party and overnight in the hotel was 250€ a couple), but it was very good. Be free to ask anything you need.

Hello Luna,
Do you need to book a hotel, you can also rent, for example, my holidayhome. Look therefore at www.pauolo.nl. Newyear in Nazare is also more and more fun every year. You can a lot of info on the internet. The weather is o.k. Most of the time in December we are barbecueing outside out of the wind. The temperature is during the day with sun more than 20 degrees Celcius, without about 15 degrees. Sometime there is also bad weather or a little storm, this goes often away in some days. Going single is for you o.k., in Portugal it is very safe. Also newyear at the beach is a family matter, is also very safe, but be aware of some groups, bad people are everywere on the whole world. Regards Paul Siero. For questions, don't hesitate, just send an email to paulo@tele2.nl or info@pauolo.nl.
