Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Uzbekistan Samarkand Khiva and Bukhara Khiva Distance
Posted: Sat November 10, 2007 10:33 AM UTC
Hi All,

I happen to travel to Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara through some program that completely finance my trip. I also heard that Khiva is a very interesting place to visit where my program does not finance a travel. Is it really worth visiting? And if so, can anyone advise how long it takes to get there from Samarkand, Tashent or Bukhara? and from where it is better to travel Samarkand, Bukhara or Tashkent?

Thanks all and hi from Georgia

Since in Railroad-legalese Uzbegistan is in Europe (even China and VietNam is!): there are some pictures about the trains on www.railfaneurope.net

Bukhara->Tashqent train can be seen here:

http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/ne/Uzbekistan/car/pix.html

It's a very fast and modern train, uses Russian couches from Tver' and Chinese electric loco.

Tashqent->Samarkand is 3:40 hours and up, three trains daily at 7:00, 8:10, 17:30. Arrival at 10:40, 11:56, 22:49.

You can look up by yourself on www.db.de German railway site. Use "Taschkent". Could not find "Bukhara" how is it spelled on DB web site.

Khiva is 1050km from Tashkent. Bukhara is the nearest big city of those you list - about 7 hours by road -either bus or with a driver. You would need to travel to Urgench - there is a train from Bukhara but it gets very heavily booked days in advance so you would need to make your arrangements well in advance of travelling - and then catch a bus or taxi to Khiva, about 35km away. There are 3 flights daily from Khiva to Ugench but none from Bukhara. Flights are relatively cheap, check the Uzbekistan Airways website (in Russian). I found Khiva very interesting, well worth a visit.
