| Madeira Island | Getting to Cabo Girão? Posted: Fri November 9, 2007 06:54 PM UTC
We're going to be in Funchal for a day at the end of the month, and I'm trying to find a way to make the most of our 8 hours. In addition to some sights around Funchal, I think we might like to head over to see Cabo Girão.
If we took a taxi, about how long would it take and how much would it cost? Would it be possible to get there/back by bus? Thanks for your help! |

Either transport is practical but the frequent local bus is so much more fun to ride in. Unequivocally, the bus is way cheaper and takes just the same amount of time - about 20 -25 mins. from Funchal. I think there is a bus that circles the entire island dropping off passengers in all these serene little villages along the way. Don't know if this is still running but I took this when visited Madeira about a decade ago. Check with the tourist office.

Thanks for the input! Do you happen to know how often the local bus runs? Once an hour? More/Less often?

At this time of the year it seems that the ride it's not so frequent.
This is operated by http://www.rodoeste.pt/Index1.html and according to what they have in their webpage it's running only 3 times a day,... so better to ask in your hotel. Although I would strongly recommend to rent a car and stop wherever you want. It's worth because you can get cheap cars (30-50€ a day) Enjoy

There are lots of Rodoeste buses that go to Ribeira Brava that pass through Cabo Girão, number 7 is the main one. From Funchal probably costs about a €1 (the prices are on the website) and takes about 30 minutes. How much is a taxi? If you are Madeiran, probably 6 or 7 Euros. If you are are tourist, nearer double, if not more. Best get a metered cab in Funchal.
