| Helsinki | New Year's Eve? Posted: Fri November 9, 2007 03:51 PM UTC
We'll be in Helsinki for New Year's Eve this year, our first time.
A few questions: 1. Will we have to fight our way to the bar all the time? Or are they easy to get in without throngs of crowds (like the UK) filling every available space? 2. Will it be booking only for bars and restaurants? 3. How much for a beer? 4. What will the weather be like? 4. In the UK, New Year's Eve is a major thing. People are packed like sardines into every pub. There also might be vomiting and fighting! Is Helsinki more cultured than all of this? Thanks in advance, Jason |

I used to think 4+ Euros's was very expensive but 4+ Euro's if you work it out is what we pay in the UK now
The UK is no longer cheap for alcoholic beverages in pubs Unfortunately though - you won't find any cheap eating places in Helsinki. Eating out is very pricey - i really struggled to feed myself when i was there

Ok - i take the point Finns may be less aggressive. However they can be very loud like the Brits - i witnessed many comming back on the ferry from Estonia - and it is just like watching the Brits going on a cheap Booze Cruise

The more popular nite spots will be very packed. However, many Finns spend new year's at home parties or out of town in cabins and ski resorts. So not all bars / clubs are packed.
Beware of fireworks flying horizontal. Some idiots just can't behave. But this occurs mainly at the Senate square, where the city's fireworks take place. Don't know if it'll happen this year, though. Anyone? Beer 2,5 - 7 €. Depending on place and happy hour. Lots cheaper in Kallio area than center. Vomiting - you bet. Fighting - maybe. But hey, that's also culture.
