Agadir Getting from Agadir into Westhern Sahara
Posted: Thu November 8, 2007 07:54 PM UTC
Dear friends,

Is there a public bus service from Agadir to the south? For example to Laayoune. I will be in Agadir in December, and would like to travel to the W.Sahara.

And what is the best way to get to Algier from Agadir by public transport?

Regards and thanks for the answer.

There is indeed a bus service operated by both CTM and Supratours.
CTM operates from 11 Rue Yacoub El Mansour and Supratours, who have luxury class coaches at very reasonable rates, have an office on Rue Des Oranges.
Both have a web site which for most purposes is less than useful.
Depending on the demand for journeys to Laayoune; you should book a seat as soon as you arrive in Agadir.
As far a Algiers goes, the border for direct rail crossing has been closed for some years now so you will have to go from Agadir to Marrakech by coach. From Marrakech you go to Oujda but change at Sidi Kacem. Oujda is as close as the train will get you to Algeria. It's a long, long way to travel so consider getting the 'plane direct to Oujda, Royal Air Maroc may do you a good deal.
What is so special about Algiers? I'd love to go too but I value my life too much.

Thanks for the precise answer,

The reason that I asked for how to go to Algier and to the West Sahara is that I want to go outside of tourist traps. Are the border pass open between Algier and Marocco? Will they allow foreigners to pass?

There are two border crossings between Algeria and Morocco, both closed at the present; the problem dates back to the start of civil unrest in October 1963. The most common is on the road connecting Oujda and Tlemcen in the northern parts. The other is the one connecting Figuig and Beni Ounif, in western Algeria. Of these two, the one between Tlemcen and Oujda is from time to time open; the one between Figuig and Beni Ounif will stay closed for some time to come. The border crossing takes a longer time where there are more people inside the vehicle so travelling by car is better than bus, and bus is better than train (only in the north). Both border crossings offer zealous officials, and this has grown into a time consuming activity during the civil war of Algeria.
Bureaucracy rules in N Africa.
