Grenoble Visiting Grenoble
Posted: Thu November 8, 2007 06:04 AM UTC
Hi All;

I'm Khamal, live in Malaysia. I work with French company here and will be in St. Martin, Grenoble (1st time, I just join this company) on 26th for work for 3 weeks. I still do have weekend for some little travel. I like photography so much and do have SLR camera that i will take with me there.

My Questions:
1. Is english can be understand by local people there?
2. Can I rent a car for weekend and how much it will cost? It is nice if you can give me the contact number.
3. How is the nightlife in Grenoble?
4. It is easy to go to beaches, southern part or to Zurich or Munich by land transport?
5. Can you advise the good places in Grenoble?

Please Advise...

1. yes speak slowly
2. Car rentals are widely available in Grenoble, try:

http://www.avis.com/
http://www.europcar.com/
http://www.europebycar.com/index.html
http://www.france-car-hire-rental.com/
http://www.interrent.com/
http://www.kayak.com/cars
http://www.kemwel.com/

Short term rentals are very expensive, I estimate 50 euros/day plus insurance and fuel.

3. Grenoble is a large city, it should be animated at night.

4. There will be no beach in Europe during the month of November that has anything but drift wood upon it. This is winter.

5. I am not sure what you mean by "good places". A little google research may serve.

There is very little to add to the answer from Sarastro.
There are many French and foreign students, researchers, engineers etc… in Grenoble. Most if not all know English. It will not be difficult to find English speaking people but do not expect that everybody will speak/understand English.

Yes, you can “easily” go to Zurich and Munich but if you go for a weekend, once arrived on a Saturday, you will have an evening in the city and on Sunday, you will have to drive back. Geneva (Switzerland), Lyon (France) or Turin (Italy) should be more reasonable goals for weekends.

I have a rather detailed page on Grenoble and neighboring towns (including Saint-Martin-d’Hères). Have a look at these pages, they will give you answers to some of your queries and more.
