Is it safe to go to Agra/Taj alone? Any suggestions of good tour(s) by travel agency? What will be the perfect time to visit? Any other interested places/activities other than Taj Mahal? Perhaps some good online travel agencies/hotel bookings will be helpful. Thank you.

For the most part it is safe but there have been instances of serious crime by unofficial guides. It is rare but the local police do warn about it. (Two Japanese tourists were drugged and raped in September). You will want to go with a reputable tour service. There are many to chose from and I would recommend working with whichever hotel you are staying at. Avoid guides that approach you once you are there. Book a guide before hand as well as transportation.

When are you going? Agra and the Taj will be packed this time of year. Typical 4 hour travel from Delhi to Agra may extend to 6 or 8 at this time so I would recommend a stay over in a hotel in Agra (Advance booking will be required).

Hotels will be expensive this time of year and will need plenty of notice to find a vacancy. I recommend getting to Agra a day before you want to see the Taj and actually going there right before sun up to watch the sun rise. Evenings will be very crowded to say the least.
