Probably 24-hours. You can fly for about the same price (less, probably), and the time needed to do that will probably be less than 3 hours.

Not at all recommended, check out this webpages for cheap airlines, for flights from toluca to cancun or from mexico city to cancun:
www.interjet.com.mx, www.volaris.com.mx and www.clickmx.com Interjet and Volaris depart from Toluca, one hour bus distance from Mexico City, but this airlines have shuttles that take you from mexico city to the toluca airport. Although traveling in a lowcost airline is kind of unconfortable (cause you have to get to toluca), its much better than going by bus all the way to playa del carmen. Playa is 30-50 minutes from Cancun airport, you can get there by taxi or rent a car. I would recommend you to rent a car because the taxis are very expensive and there are plenty of places to visit all around the mayan riviera.
