Wisconsin Texans Loose in Wisconsin

We plan a week in Wisconsin the end of June, into and out of MKE. Arriving on Saturday, we'll first head downtown to the Polish Festival, etc., and stay in Milwaukee for two nights probably. Our last night or two we'll spend in Madison and head to the airport again on Saturday.

In between though we're a bit unsure. Is Door County too touristy and overrun that time of year? I hear 42 can get quite taxed.

What about instead heading across to the Mississippi and La Crosse, taking in Vernon County on the way to Madison.

Is it crazy to consider doing both Door Co and La Crosse with so little time? Any better itineraries?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not going until June...Planning ahead I see!

Door County is pretty crowded in the summer, but more on the weekends. It is possible to get a place to stay for a reasonable price if you plan ahead. 42 used to be difficult, but the road has been expanded to a four-lane highway for nearly the entire distance between Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay. It might be finished by the summer, but I'm not sure.

The drive from Milwaukee to La Crosse is nice. There are some interesting sights along the way. If you stay off the main freeway, you can see some nice views. Devil's Lake is somewhere between Madison and La Crosse and is a very nice place to take a hike.

I think doing Milwaukee, Madison La Crosse and Door County would be a little too much for a week. I would suggest Milwaukee for two days. Then head up to Door County. If possible you could take the route that goes through Fond Du Lac, Oshkosh, Appleton, Green Bay and then into Sturgeon Bay. It's more interesting than the freeway. Or There is another way that goes through Manitawoc (Spelling?), Two Rivers, Kewaunee and Algoma. That is also much nicer than the freeway.

Then you could go back down to Madison and spend a few days there.

I'm a native of the Milwaukee area and I went to Door County every year for a few weeks for nearly my entire life. So, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I also agree, Dc and LC, way to much. There's loads to do in Milwaukee and Madison, each has a zoo, many bars, parks, etc. I also agree about Summerfest, I've been there, its way fun, definately worth the trip.
