Antarctica Webcams on the Fram
Posted: Sun November 4, 2007 04:39 PM UTC
I like to have a look at the webcams on the Hurtigruten ships when they are in the Antarctic (brings back memories...). I see they have the Fram down there for the first time this year, but I can't find any links to webcams on the ship - the Hurtigruten website webcam links don't seem to work for me, and Fram is not listed on the bt.no website

Does anybody know if the Fram has any webcams?

If you're due to travel on Nordnorge this year, you can get a sneak preview at http://www.bt.no/kamera/article208141.ece?articleID=208141&lang=en

I am also wishing that Fram had webcams. When I was on part of her maiden voyage in May I should have tried to find out whether there were any plans to install them but I did not think to ask.

As the other Hurtigruten webcams appear to be sponsored by the Norwegian newspaper Bergens Tidende, it is perhaps understandable that they are less interested in Fram, which is not being used on the regular route in Norway.

However I would think it would be a worthwhile form of advertising for Hurtigruten to put a webcam on Fram themselves. I have already booked to return to Antarctica, this time on Fram, on the new Polar Circle Quest itinerary for January 2009. This time my husband will also come, and I am sure that his interest in making the trip has been encouraged by watching webcam pictures.

Just as we were wishing for this webcam it starts up, right on time for Frams’s first days in Antarctica!

Thanks globetrott for being the first to spot it and for bringing it to our attention, and of course huge thanks to Bergens Tidende.

Great timing 737chick! Welcome to get in touch should you have any last-minute questions. Check your VT mail where I've sent you a photo of the ship (as I have not got around to making a homepage yet).

Thanks for the link. Pity only the one webcam though rather than the more usual three.

When are you going? We are on the Dec. 23rd trip. Also - very excited. We're busy buying expedition weight long underwear.

Ruthellen,
Pack lighter weight longjohns too. I found one mid weight layer long underwear, fleece lined jeans and a light waterproof layer to be more than adequate. We had only one clear sunny day, but the temp was in the 40's that day! Turtleneck, sweater, fleece layer and waterproof layer was plenty even on the coldest landing. Oh, and hat. Always a hat.
The food was not the highlight of the trip (but I am not complaining, that's not why we went). If you can survive on smoked fish, cheese and bread, you will be quite happy. Likewise if you are a fan of reindeer (I am not as it turns out). If you are at all a picky eater, you will want to bring some provisions with you.
