Posted: Sat November 3, 2007 04:51 PM UTC
okay I am still grappling with my itinerary. Any takers (Ellyse;-)
Beijing 4 days
Xi'an 1 day
fly to Lijiang 4 days
fly to Guilin and on to Yangshuo 5 days
fly to Shanghai 5 days (side trips to Hangzhou and Suzhou)
fly home from Shanghai
I cut out Pingyao as I could not figure out how to get on to xi'an from there

I think that visiting both Hangzhou and Suzhou during your stay in Shanghai could prove that you'll hardly have any time left to visit Shanghai, that instead is the town in China that deserves most time spent.
If I was you (but I am not) I would only go to Hangzhou and forget about Suzhou

I recommend 2 days at Xian. Xian is such an important historical place in Chinese culture. Yangshuo can be reduced. Hangzhou and Suzhou are treasures not to be missed. If you can throw in another day for Nanjing. Shanghai is nice but two days is enough. Just my opinion.

I absolutely agree with the previous poster. The time in Yangshou can be reduced to probably 2 days. And you should have at least two full days in Xi'an - it is a fascinating city and merits more than just a flying trip to the Terracotta Warriors!

Pingyao -- Xi'an is easily done by overnight train. Get a guesthouse in Pingyao to get the tickets beforehand.
