Hi,
It depends where you are staying and driving from. I've been to Pompeii 3 times, and I still havn't seen it all, but its probably because i never get there until the afternoon!!. I guess if you are short of time, you could do Pompeii in the morning, and just see the highlights, and then vesuvius in the afternoon, though personally i think you should devote a day to each!!.Serena

Hi
To get to vesuvius you take circumvesuviano train from Naples to Ercolano, which incidentally is where the amazing site of Herculaneum is, and is much smaller than pompeii. The station of Pompeii Scavi, is on the same line a few stops from Ercolano, towards Sorrento (end of Line). Hope this helps,Have a great day, just start early!!. Serena

I would suggest going to Vesuvius first. This way you will know how much time you have to look round Pompeii. Take the Circumvesuviana to Ercolano Scavi station then get a minibus from outside the station. (cost 10 euros pp in may 04). This should get you back to the station in about 2 hours. They dropped us off right at the entrance. The drawback was that we only had 40 minutes or so to walk up, look round and come back down, which was not really enough time to appreciate it. Alternatively, there is a bus service but this would take much longer. Back at Ercolanl Scavi station, take the Sorrento train to Pompei Scavi which is close to the entrance. There is also a bus that goes between Pompei excavations and Vesuvius.
Best wishes
Peter.
