| Honolulu | Is it a good idea?? Posted: Wed October 31, 2007 05:22 AM UTC
Hey!
Me and my girlfriend just up and decided to buy an around the world ticket. The 1st stop is gonna be Honolulu. We do have money saved but the plan is to have a short vacation and then maybe work for a month or so. I guess my questions would be, is it wise to go there without any contacts? Is it easy to find comfortable but not too pricy accomodation for 1-2 months without a job to prove your income? And if, where would be the best place to find this? Any help would be extremly comforting and appreciated thanks |

how can we direct the answers when we dont know your nationality? if you are a Yank, it is a separate story. But if you are an aussie, there are visas for younger people etc.
good luck. Honolulu is a good place to start. whether you are going west or east

I would also ask you, where do you suggest going & working??? - what do you have in mind?
Reason being... I have a girl friend that is from australia and she is living and working in london.... but she hates it cause its cold and its their winter... but I guess if you choose your location wisely (ie: something that you both like) - like a beach resort etc... you will loveit...go in the summer cause then there will be more jobs available... summer in europe im meaning I did a 10 week around the world holiday just 3 months ago and there were heaps of places like the greek islands that had girls and guys working at the beach bars Or on the beach selling/renting chairs and umberellas etc & these people were from australia/london OR usa and they were all happy to be there... good luck!!!

if you are on a holiday and wanting to work you can get bar jobs etc which are cash in hand and you dont really require a visa... although.. be carefuL!
I havent been to hawaii... maybe put up another question in the forum about where to stay?

Anywhere in the USA you need work authorization to work unless you do it illegally and then it's on your head. Honolulu is a nice place to vacation and maybe jobs in Waikiki are plentyful if you don't mind cleaning rooms or serving food. My advice don't come here to work unless you fancy sleeping in a cell,by all means visit the US it has a lot to offer...I am a permanent resident so treat the country with respect and you will do fine.

It will be difficult for you to find work without contacts. I lived in Hawaii for 5 years - all of the casual hospitality jobs like bartending and waitressing are over-subscribed with legal workers.
You could find illegal work, but it's not easy and very time consuming. You are unlikely to enjoy the experience. Hawaii is expensive, although the euro is strong so it may not be too bad. There is one idea I have for you that may work for you both. You could search craigslist.org for positions as either house-sitters or au pair/babysitter. But likely they'll only want your gf. Sorry, but that's reality.

the cheapest lodging will be the hostels, mostly in waikiki. they`are listed on th internet. otherwise it is expensive here. The hostels are clean and you can make contacts there.
