Well I haven't studied recently in Damascus, rather about 3 years ago now (so I guess thats kind of recent!!) If you are a Muslim then study at 'Abu Noor', if you're a Non muslim I'd say the best option is the University of Damascus.
The cost of living is pretty cheap although rent is increasing due to an influx of Iraqi refugees.
Contact me if you want more detailed info. I can even give you contact numbers of people who can help you once you get there.

Beside Damascus University , there are few institutes for learning Arabic.

if you are a beginner then The University is a good suggestion, and accomodation is easy to find, nowadays so manyhouses in the old city are either renting rooms with an arabic family (a way to practice your Arabic) or some houses are fully of student, room costs around 150 USD and living there you should be fine with 400 USD amonth for a good living with excellent conditions...this is as far as I know and think,I have few friends studying there, I can give you their contacts !!

Hi there,

Im currently in Damascus myself and arrived a month ago. I am here until next August to study Arabic. I will be studying at the University of Damascus as this is one of the best places to do so.

Living is reasonably cheap and you can either live with a family or rent an apartment or furthermore stayin a hotel. Depends on how long you are staying for.

If you dont want to do all this alone there is a good, reputable company that can help you as I have gone with them. Check out their website, it is called ARABESK STUDIES. Type this into Google and follow the link. They help you deal with acommodation, studies, immigration etc.

I hope this is of help to you! Let me know how you get on if you decide to go ahead!

Take care.
