When I was visiting Alesund in August I went to Fjellstue scenic point. Among the rocks at the very pik of the mountain there was a bronze plate commemorating the death of a young English aviator. He got killed over Alesund in 1944 if I remember well. Does anybody know why this plate is there and what was the name of that guy? There is no monument there, just a small plate hidden among the rocks.

I guess he was one of the Allied servicemen who took part in the attempts to liberate Norway frpm German occupation and that his plane was shot down at or near the spot where you saw the memorial plate.
In 1944 that area suffered greatly; the Germans evacuated the provinces of Finnmark and northern Troms, using a scorched earth policy to create an area of No-man's land after the Red Army attacked their positions in eastern Finnmark. The Soviets then attacked into eastern Finnmark to create a buffer zone after pushing the German forces out of the arctic Kola peninsula.
The Russians peacefully returned the area to Norwegian control after the war and the German forces in Norway surrendered on 8 May 1945.

Does this "Fjellstue" have a name? Fjellstue just means mountain cabin. If we have a name, then perhaps we can help you pinpoint the specific story.

I think the mountain cabin has turned into a panoramic restaurant .. lots of the cruise ships take people there for a photo opportunity....
