AFAIK, the private "SOBE" is not as common in Skopje. There are some inexpensive hotels and youth hostels - look at the Skopje pages.

From my Macedonian Bible, the Bradt Travel Guide Macedonia:

Private rooms in Skopje can be arranged through the Skopje Tourist Information Office, tel 02 3116 854 (I think the Tourist Office moved, hopefully the number is still the same. The international code for Macedonia is 00389). It says private rooms start at 1200MKD per night, excluding breakfast. Ask for a room in the center.

Bed and breakfast-like pansions: Pansion Brateks at Aco Karamanov 3a (six rooms) tel 02 3176 606, mobile 070 243 232 is recommended, at the foot of Mount Vodno in a posh neighbourhood, half an hour walk from the center. Singles/doubles are 2000/3500 MKD. German and a bit English spoken.

Other pansions:
Boda, Ivo Ribar Lola 32, tel 02 3221 023
Ema, Gavril Lesnovski 4, tel 02 3078 651
Kapitstec, Mile Pop Jordanov 3, tel 02 3081 424/425
Mlin Balkan, Leninova79, tel 02 3110 635
Vuk Skopje (do not pronounce this the wrong way, it will get you in trouble!), Mile Pop Jordanov 1, tel 02 3081 426/427

There is a youth hostel as well, the Dom Blagoj Sosolcev Prolet 25, tel 02 3114 849, fax 02 3235 029. A single room costs 1520MKD for nonmembers, members pay 1210MKD. A bed in a twin room costs 1210/865MKD. Breakfast 65MKD.

I have a map of Skopje in my general tips, as well as a link to the Skopje Tourist Information website: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/6117e/6e596/1/

My guide is from 2004, so things may have changed. Please let me know if some of the information is out-dated!

Cheers

Thank you, Pijlmans, I do have the Brandt book too. I called the phone number of the tourist information office in Skopje, but they moved somewhere, and the number has changed. I guess I will stay this time in one of those B&B places, and as they appear to be close to each other, and will check all of them, to find out what suits me best for my future weekend forays to Skopje.

BTW: ordered one on Amazon few days ago, here it's three buckee (plus three-ninetynine for shipping-handling). Just in case, ordered one Serbia, too for six-null-seven buckee, same three-99 for shipping/handling.

Love the US-prices on amazon-dot-com... Eyewitness Croatia for well under $10... :-)
