Hi, myself and a friend are visiting lake garda and staying in garda next May. We have been before in 2005 but only for a couple of days. This time we would like to visit the dolomites. Is it better to go on an organised tour or do it yourself. We have no transport so it would be train/bus. Also how much would it cost and where should we go in the dolomite region. We would only be going on a day trip.

Visiting the Dolomites in May is between seasons. The ski season finishes in April and the Summer season starts in June. This means most of the gondolas and cable cars are closed for maintenance, restricting your access to the mountains.
From Pescheria del Garda you can catch a train to Trento via Verona. The total time is about 1.75 hours to Trento. From Trento you can catch buses that travel to places like Pinzolo, Madonna di Campiglio and Pass del Tonale. These are all resorts in the high Dolomites. For train schedules I'm afraid you're a bit early. The link you need is: http://orario/trenitalia.com/b2c/Timetiable? Feed in Dept: Garda abd arrival: Trento This will give you the timetables but they are currently only good to the nd of November. For buses Trento check out:www.ttspa.it. Again, their schedules are not yet on line for May 2008.
