How difficult is driving a car and navigating the roads in Krabi & Phuket? Do you recommend this?

Speaking as somebody who has driven several times in Thailand, including around Bangkok, my opinion is that the Phuket/Krabi area is one of the best areas in the country for driving. My one word of warning is to make sure you have good maps.

If you are staying around Krabi and only need to go to/from restaurants etc, then use the tuktuks. Lots of them all over and cheap. You can rent a car and the traffic is not too bad in both Phuket and Krabi. I have rented cars in both places and in BKK too. Rent from recognised agencies only.
