Selous Game Reserve Safari - which park? Reservations in advance?
Posted: Wed September 10, 2003 11:04 PM UTC
We are flying to Dar Es Salam in two weeks and want to go on a 3-5 day safari before we proceed to Mozambique. We suppose the best is to go to a park near Dar (e.g. Selous or Mikumi). Has anyone suggestions regarding which to go to? Should we try to book in advance or is it easy enough to find a good company once there?

Not in answer to your question, but to ask you one. How are you going from Dar to Moz? Bus, dhow, ferry, fly or combination therein? I am in Tanzania about a year from now and would like to see the coast as far as Mtwara. If I am that close it would be nice to try and get to the Isla da Mozambique, but that area doesn't seem easy to travel without a bit of time at hand.

Hallo,
Refer to your inquary regarding visiti
ng selous or Mikumi,hereunder are
the details.

Iam local owned tour company named Tran-kili adventure safaris ltd based in Dar-es-salaam.

Through my experiance i ll surggest
5 days tour combining Mikumi&Selous since they are not far from each other and they are bot
h interesting.

Suggested Itinerary.

Day 1.Leave Dar at 7.30am with 4wd landrover to Selous game reserve.Evining gamedrive, then dinner&overnight at Mloka campsite
or Rufiji river tented camp.

Day2.Early morning boat safari along the great rufiji river for 3 hours.Thousands of hippos to be seen with other different animals. After lunch proceed with gamedrive accompaned by our experienced driverguide who will explain abou FLORA&FAUNA..Dinner&Overnight at Mloka or Rufiji river camp.

Day3.Morning walking safari accompaned by an armed game ranger for two hours.Come close to animals and take nice photos. Then
make a game drive enroute to Mikumi.Dinner&Overnight at Genesis campsite/Kikoboga tented camp.

Day4.Full day game viewing in mikumi.Dinner&overnight at Genesis campsite/Kikoboga tented camp.

Day5.Halfday game in Mikumi then
drive back to Dar.End of tour.

From Dar-es-salaam you can decide to proceed to Mozambique
by flight or take a boat to Mtwara then connect another boat from Mtwara to Mozambique.

In this itinerary you can see much animals especialy on the boat safari in Selous.

The short safari can also be organised apon request but will cover one of those parks.

The price will depend on the number of people and a place to stays. So for more information please contact me :transkili@yahoo.com or call
+255 744 292801

I hope to hear from you soon,

Norman Shayo.

I used Norman Shayo for a tour in Tanzania and I don't even think he owns his own tour company(from what the local safari company told me). I think he's a person who earns a comission for bringing in the people locally from Dar es Salaam. I would reccomend calling the local tour company in Arusha to get a better deal. The company that Norman sent us to was Jackpot Safaris in Arusha. We paid an average price but could of been much cheaper if Norman wasn't involved. The best companies I saw were leopard tours and Ranger Safaris. I would get a few quotes from the local companies and tell them exactly what you want.
