Machu Picchu Do you need a pass to go to Machu Picchu?
Posted: Wed October 24, 2007 05:09 PM UTC
I am trying to plan a trip but i got to some website that said you needed some kind of permission/pass to go. Is this true or could it just be reservations for that website. I dont have the websites name but i havent seen any further evidence of needing anything outside of a passport.

thanks

You'll only need a permit if you plan to hike the Inca trail up to MP - due to increased tourism the number of people permitted to hike the trail is being closely monitored. If you plan to just take the bus up to MP from Aguas Calientes, you won't need any special permits. Just pay your entrance fee at the gate to MP. Enjoy, it's stunning!

If you are planning to walk there - either on the main Inca Trail or the one day 'Royal' Inca Trail then you need a permit. There are 500 a day issued. Every guide, porter and hiker needs a permit so those 500 probably equate to about 150-200 tourists daily. Demand is very high. When you buy a permit you have to give name plus passport number. Once you get there they check the passport against the permit. They are strict. There is no way round this system, they do stick to it. I have heard that there is a means of picking up late permits from people who have cancelled but don't know who or what body administers this.
