Tough choice. They are both so unique. We liked Capri as it had shops, etc. in town but also had more tranquil places like San Michele/Anacapri. But Positano is also great for strolling etc.
Given the choice, why choose, doing a little bit of both is another option. You can catch a ferry from/returning to Positano that would give you most of the day on Capri and then a few hours in the afternoon to stroll around Positano a bit and have dinner. And you'd get those great views of each from the water as you depart and arrive. So you'd get to experience both and it really would be a pretty relaxed schedule, they are pretty close together, I think the ferry ride was 20-30 minutes max. from Positano. Hope this helps.

Hi - if you have a choice of only staying in one, would suggest Positano and visit Capri by ferry on a day trip. Capri is great, no question, but being in Positano will allow easier access to other places which might be of interest = Pompeii and Herculaneum, gorgeous Ravello, etc. If you have time to spend a night or more in both, of course, then do it. Capri is very very nice after the day trippers ( like us ) leave.
The ferry from Positano took about 50 minutes. Note that if the waters are rough, the ferry will bypass Positano because the pier is not protected unlike Amalfi. The Positano bus to Amalfi goes directly to the ferry in Amalfi, just one block away.

I, too, would choose Positano and take a day trip to Capri. I think you can see everything there in each of the towns in a day. Just remember to get your tickets for the ferry ahead of time. My husband and I waited until the "day of" to get our tickets and we had to catch a late ferry there and back.

Hi Capri is a day trip, or less if you are rushed, nice to visit but I would not stay overnight unless it was a special occasion like a Honeymoon.
More options if staying at Positano. Good Luck, Mike
