| Pompeii | How to get from Amalfi to Pompeii Posted: Fri October 19, 2007 05:03 AM UTC
We are docking in Amalfi and want to send time there and in Pompeii. The boat leaves at midnight.
So would you recommend a tour guide with driver to Pompeii vs public transportation? If a tour guide/car can you recommend a service? |

You might want to read this thread:
http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discussion-373820- That person had wanted to do all of the Amalfi Coast in one day, but found that just getting from Naples to Pompeii and back took up their entire day. From Amalfi, it's a significantly longer trip to Pompeii, so you would need even more time.

It's a lot easier to get to Pompeii from Rome than Amalfi.

If you rent a car you can get to Pompei a lot faster from Amalfi that Rome. Take the road going north , SS163 to the Autostrada del Sole instead of heading towarn Napoli first. Driving time is about one hour this way vs. the 2 hours from Rome. Rome is a straight shot but further away.

I certainly agree with travelgourmet's plan if you wish to rent a car but with the limited amount of time you probably have from your cruise ship this is one of the ( rare ) times when hiring a guide and driver might be a good idea. Don't want to miss the boat in more ways than one.

Ok. It might cost a little but you can find out how much by going onlin to Sandro at RomaLimo. My wife and I used Sandro (great english and knowledge, also owner)in Rome,to the port of Civitavecchia, and to the airport and found him to be about average priced for this service but a great talker with incite to things you want to see or do. They do have a Naples/Pompei/Sorento/Positano tour as well. I have a transportation tip on them on my Rome pages and their website is http://www.romalimo.com/guidedtour.htm

it is much easier to do by private transportation but i'll give you options for both:
A guide that I have used frequently in Pompeii is called Salvatore and is one of the best ones at the site. He can set up your transportation from Amalfi as well. His cell number is 0333 413 6300 and he speaks English perfectly. It may cost you 100 euros for the transportation. By public transportation it is complicated but doable. Look at this website: http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campania/orarioCA200 Normally you need to get to Agerola and then change buses and go to Castellammare Terme and get off at the Circumvesuviano train station where you catch the train to Pompeii. Then it's the same on the way back. As you can see it is complicated. If you decide to go this route let me know so I can give you more detailed information on where to get on and off the buses.

Hi With your limited time and if you want to be certain of seeing these sights I recommend you take a guided tour. Driving yourself will be stressful. Pompeii can be very busy. You do not want the stress of missing the cruise boat.
Good Luck, Mike
