Mali Alternative to Festival in Dessert
Posted: Thu October 18, 2007 09:15 PM UTC
Because Festival in Dessert is not possible to attend due to early dates I would like to ask if anyone has ever attended festival on Niger in Segou. We are mainly interested in a lot of local music and traditional performances. Can Festival on Niger compare to the one in the Dessert?

Hi,

I can't compare the 2 festivals, but I was in Segou just before this years (2007) one and there were some great acts on :i.e. Salif Keita, Tinariwen and Oumou Sangaré. So I think you'll not have the same atmosphere as being out in the desert under the stars but going by the acts they put on in Segou, it's just as good.

Cheers

Hi,

Mali in January is very warm, so cotton trousers o.k. and some shorts (knee length), t-shirts for the day. Probably need a good fleece for the evenings too. For the night depends on your sleeping conditions.
