| Sorrento | Easter Processions in Sorrento Posted: Thu October 18, 2007 04:20 AM UTC
My family and I will be in Sorrento for three days before Easter next year. There is supposed to be a procession on Thursday night and also on Good Friday night. The website about the procession says that the Thursday procession is in "the middle of the night between Thursday night and Friday". Does that mean it is at midnight? We were thinking of staying at a hotel in Via Capo area. Will there be bus service after the processions? The regular bus service looks like it usually ends at 10 pm. Is it walkable to Via Capo from where the processions will take place? What are the odds of finding parking if we drove our car into Sorrento for the processions?
Sorry to load up so many questions, but the heart of this is that we want to see the processions, but we would also like to stay in Via Capo to get the lovely terrace rooms. Problem is ... transportation to and from town. |

Last Easter (2007) I attended both Easter processions. The most magical procession was on Thursday...actually Friday morning at 3am! The streets were very full even in the wee hours of the morning...but nothing like the crowds on Friday. It was moving to experience the silence in the streets of the city broken by the sad, moving music and chants. We went out of our way to be in Sorrento specifically to experience the Easter Processions. They were amazing! I, like you, thought the White Procession would be around midnight and almost did not get up to go see it. Luckily I did...it was one of the highlights of my month in Italy.
Our hotel was a block away so I can't answer your question about the buses. The Procession continues until sun up and even after going back to bed I could hear the magical music winding its way thru Sorrento. Have a great trip!

Thank you so much for the information. It sounds wonderful. I've decided to book rooms in town to make things easier. We'll get our terrace views from a restaurant at dinner maybe :), and visit the hotel that I liked on a future trip.

Excellent idea to stay in town! Sorrento has so much to see and being in town and being able to just walk out your door is worth a lot. If you want to email me I will look up the name of the hotel we stayed in. They actually had a couple of rooms on the 3rd floor overlooking the procession. But you simply must go down to street level to really get the whole vibe!

Youtube! What a wonderful idea! I never thought of that, but you are right. I found several videos of the procession. Thank you for the suggestion!
