Hi Leng Leng, the drive from Rome to Positano should take around 3 hours on Autostrada A1. Be aware this is a toll road and you will have to pay to use it.
The distance is approximately 250 kms. There is one ferry daily from Positano to Capri(May to October only)but you'd do better to drive from Positano to Sorrento, then take a ferry or hydrofoil from there.

The driving trip from Positano to Rome is largely dependant on two factors - how far inside Rome circle autostrada you are going and then also how much traffic you hit in the little bottleneck village of Meta on the Amalfi peninsula north coast. Our trip took two and three quarter hours. Question - do you actually need to drive into Rome? Is this a rental car you could dump at the airport and then take public transportation into Rome?

Thanks nicola,I have no idea if we should keep the car with us by driveing it into Rome and park near hotel or maybe we will have to hire a driver. The public transportation is harder with my 2 year old son, that's why we thought of driving or hire a car that will cost my arm and legsss!Wonder how much a trip like that cost?

we have done this actually - drove from Positano and once from elsewhere to Fiumcino airport and returned the rental car. Once we got a taxi and one we took the nonstop train direct from the airport to downtown Rome. With luggage and a baby, the taxi might be easier. There is a fixed fee from the airport to the center of Rome for taxis which someone here hopefully will provide.

There is some confusion presently about the taxi fare into Rome from Fiumicino.
The City authorities and Rome taxi drivers reached an agreement recently on a flat rate fare of 40 euros. This does not, however, apply to taxi drivers registered at the airport who are charging 60 euros. Standing in line you may be directed to an airport registered taxi. If you refuse the 1st taxi, you may have to go to the back of the queue, leaving you with no guarantee when you reac the front again that you will not be directed to an Airport registered taxi.

My wife and I love Positano, and we’ve been there twice. Six years ago, I drove from Rome and two years ago we went by train/bus/ferry.
I recognize that driving may be more practical with baby on board, but I advise people not to drive for a few reasons, as follows: The 10 mile drive before reaching Positano is treacherous. Narrow road with hairpin turns, and you need to have a race-driver stomach to do it. Focusing on driving, I missed much of the breathtaking scenic views. Once you get to Positano, parking is scarce and very expensive, and driving in and out for daily trips is impractical. I learned my lesson and found that taking trains and ferries was much more relaxing, adventurous, and you get to meet lots of people. I estimate that total costs were about same between driving (rental, gas, parking) and public transportation. Also, as others also advised, avoid driving in Rome. Positano to Capri: Yes, take ferry. You can do a day trip, but an overnight stay is worth it. Jim
