| Auckland | hesitant auckland admirer Posted: Wed October 17, 2007 03:57 PM UTC
Hi. I've just been recently offered a job in Auckland, I'm just wondering if an annual salary of 50,000 gross should be enough? I have no idea what the cost of living is.... and how are the people? are they friendly? :) thanks!

Hi
we were in Aukland about 6 years ago The standard of living cost wise is around the same prices as England. People are friendly and one thing I remember well about this country is that people only cross at lights and WAIT until lights change---even if all clear. Good luck and have fun Bal

Hi,
You should be fine on that. It's an average wage for the area. Cost of living is relatively high in my opinion (as a British expat) with most people enjoying far less disposable income than they do in the UK where I am from. People are friendly and welcoming, although it can take a while to 'dig beneath the surface' as it were. Feel free to email me if you'd like more info. Your post may well be deleted as it isn't a travel related question.

Of course we're friendly!
You should be able to live comfortably on $50k although I would recommend house-sharing rather than trying to live on your own as rental is high in Auckland. If you are living and working centrally your transport costs will be low and food and entertainment although slightly costlier than the UK still aren't crippling. Auckalnd is a great city if you enjoy the outdoors and water sports as it is accessible to some fantastic spots. I am returning to Auckalnd in February after 2 years in London and I can't wait!!! Take the job and go!

Auckland is relatively expensive as you really need a car to get around and to enjoy the beaches unless you live close to the City. Public transport is a bit of a joke. Tip - live near work.
The inner suburbs will set you back about $150 per room in rent (that is a clean midsized room). That does not include utilities (they pay for water)which is abotu $60 a month. Food is average but bars can be expensive. I would think the average wage in Auckland is about $50,000 but if you can get more try as people try to get an "auckland allowance" - just more money. Some try to get a travel allowance instead.
