Anyone know when is the Loy Krathong and how is it celebrated in Chiang Rai ?
With 3 nights, where shall I go around Chiang Rai that is easily done with local transport ? Which are the best nearby towns to visit in a day or overnight trip ? |

I was lucky that I could experience Loy Krathong in both Chiang Rai and Sukhothai. Like other places, people buy the krathongs and release them onto the river. There is a big park by the river, about a 10-min walk from the downtown area, that stages most of the events, such as night float parade, beauty contest, food, things to buy, and of course releasing the white lantern into the sky and fireworks. The city is really small enough that you can walk around easily. You can also do an overnight trip to Mae Salong. It's a great place on the mountain with lots of Chinese and other hill tribe people too. It is famous for its oolong tea. I have more info in the same page if you are interested.

For this year, Loy Krathong Festival day is on saturday 24th November 2007 It's a very nice festival in Thailand that you should not miss it ! Lin

WE spent 3 nights in Chiang Rai a couple of years ago . We went to see the Karen Tribe which was pretty amazing and also the elephant training camps. We took a day trip to the golden triangle . We booked a driver to take us there. We also wemt across the border to Burma with the same guide/driver. It is not expensive to have book a driver for the day.
