Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Rotterdam Unsafe areas
Posted: Mon October 15, 2007 12:21 PM UTC
Sorry, I wrote that question wrong! We're staying at Eden Savoy (Hoogstraat 81) and want to know if this is a safe area and if there are any pubs/restaurants within walking distance.

And also how to get back from Ahoy in the middle of the night.

Thanks

First things first:

Here's a map with the latest "crime" incidents:

Eden Savoy is not in a posh area but it's perfectly ok. Round the corner on Mariniersweg are some nice restaurants, especially noted is: www.opazzo.nl

If you leave your hotel, turn right and keep walking, cross Mariniersweg you get to the architecturally interesting library (Bibliotheek) with the blue and yellow tubes sticking out (Blaak station/metro next to it), across the big square where markets are held on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and Sundays. Right on to the central shopping area.

You're also near the 'Oude Haven' (old harbour) with lots of restaurants and pubs (that's turn left on Mariniersweg from your hotel, cross the big street (Burgemeester van Walsumweg), keep the yellow cube houses on your right, walk between the houses straight on (Koestraat), onto the harbour.

Both walks (including trainstation/metro Blaak) take about 10 minutes.

In your street there are a few antique shops, a shop with Russian produce, and right behind the hotel a nice square with a playground.

Ahoy to your hotel late at night:
use my tip at http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1aa687/
which gives you all public transportation possibilities with a translation of the scheduler www.9292ov.nl

In your case fill in
Departure: Ahoyweg 10, Rotterdam
Arrival: Hoogstraat 81, Rotterdam

The last metro is at 0.33 hrs, with a 9 minute walk from Ahoy to Metro Zuidplein (Erasmusline), change over at Metro Beurs (Calandline), then finish at metro Blaak, walk 4 minutes to your hotel.
There are only 2 metro lines in Rotterdam (Erasmus and Caland) so that should be easy.

OR

Last buses from Zuidplein (10 min. walk from Ahoy) at 0.53, 1.24 and 2.54 hrs.

As for PJ's link (good link! But in Dutch) to the crime map of Rotterdam: the nearest case of anything was a case of drunkenness on Oostplein.
Other crimes you see are cases of traffic, vandalism, accidents, and one stabbing. All nowhere near where you are staying.
